Job Description Before & After School Care Hours 6-9 am; 2-6 pm Monday - Friday We are in over 100 schools in the Greater Indianapolis and surrounding areas. Activity Leader: Under the direction and supervision of the Site Director, the Activity Leader I is responsible for the care of the children in the Before & After School program, assists the Site Director in the implementation of programming, and interacts positively with parents and school personnel to develop a trusting relationship. The Activity Leader I fosters social, physical, spiritual and mental growth and demonstrates the core values of caring, honesty, responsibility with program participants. The candidate may provide leadership in the absence of the Site Director or Assistant Site Director. A typical Before & After School program runs from 6:30-8:30am and from 3:30-6:00pm, Monday through Friday. However, flexibility may be available to accommodate staff schedules. Company Description At the end of the school day, 11.3 million kids head to homes where they are unsupervised from 3 to 6 pm according to the Afterschool Alliance. The YMCA of Greater Indianapolis—the largest provider of school-age programs in the Indianapolis area—has spots open and financial assistance available for its Before and After School programs, which are available to children in 128 schools throughout Marion and surrounding counties. Most programs run from 6:30 am to 6 pm at the school, so no transportation is needed. “One in five children do not have someone to care for them after school,” said Colleen Horan, community vice president of Youth Development, YMCA of Greater Indianapolis. “Afterschool at the Y keeps youth active and engaged in a safe place where they can continue to learn and build social skills.” The Afterschool Alliance also says that when kids achieve more, productivity goes up, and risky behaviors go down. Open for school breaks, half days, snow days Most of the Y’s Before and After School programs are open during school breaks, half days, and when inclement weather hits. “Fall Break will be here before you know it,” says Horan. “It’s nice for parents to know that their kids are taken care of when they need to be at work.” Children in Kindergarten through 12 years of age can receive homework help and participate in art, science, literacy, service learning, and character development activities. The program also features: Healthy Eating, Physical Activity – The Y encourages healthy eating habits, limiting screen time and physical activity, and meets Healthy Eating and Physical Activity (HEPA) standards. Filling the Achievement Gap – Curriculum for children from low-income families challenged with meeting math and literacy proficiency or important developmental milestones is also available.
